Hello my name is LaMaya Middleton and I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I am originally from the Eastern Shore of Maryland where I grew up in a very small town. I am married with two beautiful children, and being a wife and a mother have both been invaluable in my training as a therapist. I feel that these two roles have truly allowed me to have a real life perspective on the things that I spend time counseling others on.
I earned my bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in human development from Howard University in Washington, DC. I earned my master’s degree in marriage and family therapy from Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA. As a Marriage and Family Therapist I recognize the role that the family plays in the functioning of all of its members. While earning my master’s degree I got the opportunity to do my practicum and internship in a setting where I got the opportunity to work with adults, children, adolescents, couples and families. I feel that this diverse training truly broadened my scope to be able to serve a variety of individuals with a variety of needs.
During my post graduate work I have had the privilege to work with a very diverse population of individuals, couples and families particularly very in need populations. I have experience working with individuals with cognitive disabilities as well as those with a variety of mental health diagnoses. In the positions that I have held my main goal was to insure that individuals that are traditionally marginalized were treated with the same respect and value as those without cognitive disabilities or mental health diagnoses were treated.
Overall, I find my work richly rewarding and fulfilling. I find it important to always keep an open mind and to always be open to learning new things. Thus, as a therapist I am still growing and learning, which I find to be invaluable when working with my clients and helping them along their journey of growth and learning.
